Baseball is going strong into summer in Oak Bay.
The U15 AA provincial baseball championships opened yesterday at Carnarvon Park, with play continuing all weekend.
Two local teams are competing, U15 Gordon Head and the regional Victoria Red Sox. Today (Friday), Gordon Head faces the Prince George Knights at noon while the Red Sox take on the Ridge Meadows Royals at 12:15 p.m. Victoria returns to the diamond at 6 p.m. to face the Cowichan Mustangs. Saturday has Gordon Head playing the Tri-City Indians at 12:15 p.m. with Victoria playing the Vancouver Minor Expos at 6 p.m.
Semi-finals open at 9:30 a.m. Sunday with the final game at 1:30 p.m. For a full schedule and more information, visit doubleplay.ca.
In other provincial baseball news, Beacon Hill’s Little League provincials continue through Sunday, July 30 at Hollywood Park.
Beacon Hill Little League, which features players from Oak Bay, plays its final round-robin game today (Friday) at 6 p.m. when they’ll face North Shore. Semi-finals run at noon and 3 p.m. Saturday with the championship game Sunday at noon.
After a weekend roadtrip to the Cowlitz Black Bears, Victoria HarbourCats welcome the Bellingham Bells to Royal Athletic Park for three evening games, July 31, Aug. 1 and 2.
From one ball game to another, cricket returns to Windsor Park Sunday, July 30 when Oak Bay takes on the University team at noon. Looking ahead to noon next Saturday, Aug. 5, Oak Bay plays Albion at St. Michaels University School.
The University of Victoria Cricket Club welcomes the region’s players to exciting fundraiser Aug. 7, when it hosts international cricket player and IPL coach Eric Simons at the Beacon Hill Park cricket ground. A three-hour bowling clinic (3 to 6 p.m.) costs $50 per club (Div. 1 only) and each club may send two bowlers. A two-hour seminar followed by a question-and-answer session runs from 7 to 9 p.m. and costs $20. In regional lacrosse, the Victoria Shamrocks return home on Friday, July 28. The ‘Rocks take on the Burnaby Lakers at the Q Centre at 7:30 p.m. in what is sure to be an exciting close to the regular season.
After winning the first of their three-game series against the Delta Islanders, the Intermediate Shamrocks are up one game to none at the time of writing and are travelling to the mainland for Game 2. If needed, a third game will take place Saturday, July 29 at 1:30 p.m. at the Q Centre.
