The Victoria Grizzlies have a pair of B.C. Hockey League home games this weekend, welcoming the Nanaimo Clippers to The Q Centre tonight (Nov. 27) and Alberni Valley on Saturday, in what’s sure to be a pair of hard-fought Island duels. Puck drops for both games at 7 p.m.
The Grizz round out the homestand on Tuesday, Dec. 1 when they host Nanaimo for a 7 p.m. game.
In Vancouver Island Junior Hockey League action, the Westshore Wolves begin their three-game week on Saturday (Nov. 28) when they head up to Parksville to take on the Oceanside Generals at 7 p.m. After a few days rest, the Wolves return to the ice next Wednesday (Dec. 2) to host the Comox Valley Glacier Kings at The Q Centre, with the puck dropping at 7 p.m. Finally, the Wolves finish the week on Thursday when they visit cross-town rivals the Victoria Cougars, with play getting underway at Archie Browning at 7 p.m. Come cheer on your hometown team!
In minor hockey action, Juan de Fuca Midget Tier 1 Grizzlies are on the road playing in Campbell River this Sunday before returning to home ice next Saturday (Dec. 5), when they’ll host the Peninsula Eagles. The game gets underway at 1 p.m. at The Q Centre.
The Midget Tier 2 Grizzlies play a road game Saturday at Oceanside in Parksville, then return home the next day to face Nanaimo Tier 2. The game goes at 2:30 p.m. at The Q Centre.
In B.C. Premier League women’s rugby, the Westshore Valkyries host Simon Fraser University at West Shore Recreation this Saturday, with kick-off at 11:30 a.m.
On the soccer pitch, Lower Island Women’s Division 1 play has Juan De Fuca hosting Bays United this Sunday, with play starting at noon at a field to be determined after press time. Vancouver Island Soccer League Div. 1 men’s play continues this Saturday when Westcastle United hosts Comox Valley United at Westhills Stadium at 7:15 p.m. In Div. 3B, Juan de Fuca hosts Nanaimo United on Sunday at 2:15 p.m. at Westshore Parks and Recreation, the same time the Div. 4A JdF side hosts SPL Big Wheels at Westhills Stadium.
As Victoria Minor Ball Hockey prepares for its 2016 season, applications for head and assistant coaches in all divisions are being accepted until Jan. 15. Interested coaches can visit vmbh.ca. Player registration is also underway.
In school sports, the Belmont junior girls Blue and Royal Bay junior boys volleyball teams wind up their respective provincial championships Saturday in Delta and Kelowna.
Middle school girls’ basketball playoffs continue next week, with games slated for Nov. 30 and Dec. 2. Dunsmuir hosts the finals on Dec. 7, with the bronze medal game scheduled for 3:45 p.m. and the championship game at 5:15.
