JOCK TALK: Find your spectator sports fix on the West Shore

Colin Gall gives a run down of where and when for local sports teams

The Royal Bay volleyball courts will be hopping this weekend when the new school hosts the senior boys AA Island Championships today (Nov. 20) and Saturday, with the bronze medal match at 2:45 p.m. and the gold medal showdown at 4:45.

At the same time at Belmont secondary in Langford, the Bulldogs are hosting the senior girls AAAA Island Championships. The bronze and gold medal matches are set for 3:30 p.m. on Saturday.

In B.C. Hockey League play, Victoria Grizzlies have two home games on the calendar this week. Head to The Q Centre tonight to see the Grizz take on the Cowichan Valley Capitals at 7 p.m. Next Friday, Nov. 27, the Grizzlies welcome Nanaimo with the first face-off at 7 p.m. at The Q.

In Vancouver Island Junior Hockey League action, the Westshore Wolves start their week on Sunday (Nov. 22) when they head over the Malahat to take on the Kerry Park Islanders. Back at home Wednesday, Nov. 25, the Wolves host the Oceanside Generals at 7 p.m. at The Q Centre.

In Tier 1 Midget hockey play Saturday, the Juan de Fuca Grizzlies welcome Comox Valley for a 3 p.m. face-off at The Q Centre.

Vancouver Island Rugby Union Div. 1 action continues for the Westshore RFC Valhallians tomorrow, but fans will have to follow their players over the Malahat to cheer on the local boys against the Cowichan Piggies. Kickoff is at 1 p.m. at the Hurd Road field. The Westshore Valkyries women also play in Cowichan, starting at 11:30 a.m.

From rugby to the Vancouver Island Soccer League, the Div. 1 Westcastle United men are on the road Saturday taking on Nanaimo United. The local boys return home next Saturday, Nov. 28 when they host Comox Valley United for a 7:15 p.m. tilt at Westhills Stadium. In Div. 3A men’s play, Westcastle Sagre’s host Hellas FC at Westhills tomorrow at 7:30 p.m.

Also in VISL play this Saturday, the Juan de Fuca 4A men host Saanich Fusion Spartans at West Shore Parks and Recreation field at 2:15 p.m. On the same field Sunday (Nov. 22), the JdF under-21 side plays a noon fixture against the Mid-Isle Mariners, followed at 2:15 p.m. by the Juan de Fuca 3B men hosting Bays United FC.

In Lower Island Women’s Soccer play, the fourth-place Div. 1 Juan de Fuca women are on the road in Nanaimo on Sunday, with a 2 p.m. kick-off at May Bennett Pioneer Park.

In Division 2 play, Juan de Fuca visits Peninsula on Sunday, but the venue was being determined at press time. See www.liwsa.com for more information. The Div. 2 team is back in action Tuesday, Nov. 24, welcoming the Victoria Athletics to the Goudy turf for an 8 p.m. start.

Div. 3 women’s action sees JdF travelling to Bays United for a Sunday match at noon (venue TBD), while that day at 10 a.m. the Juan de Fuca over-30s A are at UVic to play Castaways FC.

Middle school sports still rock the West Shore this week. Senior girls basketball starts on Monday, Nov. 23 when Dunsmuir visits Pacific Christian at for a 3:45 p.m. tip-off. Come Wednesday, Nov. 25, Dunsmuir hosts Glanford at 3:45.

Boys basketball also continues Monday, Nov. 23 when John Stubbs hosts Dunsmuir at 3:45 p.m. On Wednesday, Nov. 25 Dunsmuir plays at Cedar Hill School at 3:45 p.m. and John Stubbs hosts Spencer at 3:45 p.m.

Need another football fix? Head to Goudy field at 1 p.m. today when the Mount Douglas Rams continue their quest for another provincial senior varsity football title. The Rams take on Kelowna today in quarter-final play.
