JOCK TALK: Football, hockey lead week’s West Shore sports action

We’ve got plenty of coverage at goldstreamgazette.com/sports about this Saturday’s (Oct. 29) Cullen Cup B.C. Football Conference championship game between the Westshore Rebels and Okanagan Sun. Tickets are going fast for this game at Westhills Stadium, with a kickoff at 4 p.m. The winner hosts the Canadian Bowl final next month. Come on out and cheer on your hometown team!

Following three B.C. Hockey League games on the road this weekend, the Victoria Grizzlies return home Friday, Nov. 4 to host the Alberni Valley Bulldogs at 7 p.m. at The Q Centre before hosting the Vernon Vipers on Saturday, Nov. 5 at 7 p.m.

Join your junior B Westshore Wolves on a short Saturday road trip over the Malahat, when they take on the Kerry Park Islanders in Mill Bay, where the puck drops at 7:30 p.m. The Wolves return home Wednesday, Nov. 2 to host the Campbell River Storm at 7 p.m. at The Q Centre.

Returning from four games on the road, the WHL’s Victoria Royals host the Red Deer Rebels at 7:05 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 1 at the Save-on-Foods Memorial Centre, then welcome the Lethbridge Hurricanes next Friday, also at 7:05 p.m.

In senior rugby action, it’s a busy road weekend for the Westshore club, with the premier men’s Valhallians visiting the University of Victoria Vikes on Saturday for at 2:45 p.m. game at Wallace Field. In Div. 1 play, Westshore takes on the UVic Norsemen at 1 p.m. at Wallace. Meanwhile the Valkyries premier women are on the road in Seattle for a tilt at Magnuson Park.

Turning to women’s Div. 1 soccer, Juan de Fuca United visits the Lakehill Reds at 6 p.m. Friday (Oct. 28) and the Braefoot pitch off McKenzie Avenue. Then on Sunday, Juan de Fuca FC hosts a noon tilt against the Castaways, with the venue still being determined at press time. Visit liwsa.com for updates.

Vancouver Island Soccer League play sees the Div. 2 Westcastle United FC men hosting the Fred Milne Park Rangers FC at 8:15 p.m. on Saturday at Goudy Field, and Vic West FC the following Saturday (Nov. 5) at 7 p.m. at Westhills Stadium.

In high school sports, the senior boys soccer and senior girls volleyball regular seasons have both come to a close, but at time of writing, the playoff schedule was still being determined.

In boys soccer, the Colonist Cup challenge game and the Colonist Shield semifinal take place Tuesday, Nov. 1, with the Colonist Cup quarter-finals and the Colonist Cup Shield final set for Nov. 3. The Cup semifinal goes Thursday, Nov. 17, with the final still to be released. For more details say tuned to lowerislandschoolsports.ca.

In senior girls volleyball, city playoffs will be held Nov. 1, with Royal Bay, Oak Bay and Claremont hosting.

Senior boys volleyball continues on Nov. 2 when Pacific Christian School hosts Oak Bay, Royal Bay and Belmont at 6 p.m.

On the high school football front, head to Goudy Field this Friday (Oct. 28), when Belmont’s junior varsity Bulldogs welcome New Westminster for a 1:30 p.m. kick-off. The varsity Bulldogs take the field at 4:45 p.m., also against New West in their final game of the regular season.
