Jock Talk: Hockey, high school sports and more on tap this week on the West Shore

The Victoria Grizzlies, Westshore Wolves and Royal Bay and Belmont sports highlight the calendar this week.

The Victoria Grizzlies have a week filled with home games, opening tonight (Friday, Oct. 7) when they host the Cowichan Valley Capitals at The Q Centre at 7 p.m.

The Grizzlies return to The Q on Sunday to face the Chilliwack Chiefs in a matinee at 2 p.m. before once again hosting the Capitals at 7 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 14.

In Vancouver Island Junior Hockey League play, the Westshore Wolves follow a road trip to Comox by hosting the Nanaimo Buccaneers on Wednesday, Oct. 12. The puck drops at 7 p.m. at The Q Centre. Follow your hometown Wolves on the road Friday, Oct. 14 when they head to Panorama Rec Centre in North Saanich to take on the Peninsula Panthers at 7:30 p.m.

In high school sports, the Royal Bay senior girls volleyball team heads to St. Andrews High School on Tuesday, where they’ll take on Pacific Christian School. The Ravens senior boys hit the court Wednesday, Oct. 12 when they host Belmont, Oak Bay and Lambrick.

In senior boys soccer this week, Royal Bay plays two challenging games before their bye next week. On Tuesday, the local boys head to Tyndall Field to take on Mt. Doug at 3:30 p.m. before hosting Glenlyon Norfolk School at 3:45 p.m. at Royal Bay on Thursday.

The junior varsity Belmont Bulldogs lead the way for the varsity team, hitting the gridiron first at Mount Douglas at 1:30 p.m. today against the Rams. The varsity squads play at 3:30 p.m. The JV Bulldogs are back on home turf at Goudy Field next Thursday, when they host Terry Fox at 1:30 p.m. The varsity ’Dogs host Carson Graham there at 3:15 p.m. Friday, Oct. 14.

Cedar Hill plays host this week to high school cross country. Events open at 3:35 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 12 with the final event leaving the start line at 4:05 p.m. Come support your West Shore runners!

In Vancouver Island Soccer League play this week the Westcastle United Div. 2 men head north to play Powell River on Sunday, then return home to Westhills Stadium next Saturday, Oct. 15 to host Lakehill United at 7:15 p.m.

In Division 1 rugby, Westshore 2 hosts Castaway Wanderers 2 this Saturday, Oct. 8 at the Juan de Fuca Rec Centre field.

Tripleshot Cycling, one of B.C.’s largest all-age cycling clubs, invites cyclists of all ages and abilities to explore back country trails on Sunday, Oct. 16, while supporting youth cycling and the development of south Vancouver Island trail systems. The course, appropriate for cyclocross or mountain bike riders, starts and finishes at the Westin Bear Mountain Resort and winds through Highlands, Hartland Mountain Bike Park, Camosun College, Francis King and Thetis Lake Regional parks in addition to some private property that owners are opening for the day. The University of Victoria Vikes women’s basketball team are first on the UVic court this week when they host George Fox University at CARSA at 7 p.m. tonight. The Vikes next welcome fans the following Friday, Oct. 14, when they play host to the Windsor Lancers at 7 p.m.

The UVic women’s field hockey team also hits the pitch for a two-game week before heading to Calgary next week. The Vikes play the University of British Columbia Thunderbirds on the road on Saturday, and Sunday.

UVic’s men’s and women’s soccer teams both play just one game at home this week. The men start tomorrow by hosting the UBC Thunderbirds at 2:15 p.m. at Centennial Stadium.

The women return from a game on the Mainland to host the Fraser Valley Cascades at 5 p.m. Friday, Oct. 14 at Centennial.
