JOCK TALK: Lacrosse, high school sports on tap

Columnist Colin Gall gives the low down on who's playing where this week

As lacrosse teams take to the floor around the West Shore, the Intermediate ‘A’ Victoria Shamrocks start their week tomorrow (April 23) hosting Port Coquitlam at The Q Centre at 1:30 p.m. before a Sunday road trip to Burnaby.

The Junior ‘A’ Shamrocks get ready to open their season next Friday, April 29, when they visit the Nanaimo Timbermen at Frank Crane Arena. Come Saturday, April 30, the Shamrocks are back on home floor, welcoming the Delta Islanders to The Q Centre. The action gets underway at 5 p.m.

Turning to high school sports, badminton play continues Thursday, April 28 when Belmont heads to Reynolds for a 3:45 p.m. court time.

The final week of West Shore senior girls high school soccer begins with the Ravens hosting St. Michaels University School at the Royal Bay turf Tuesday, April 26. Kick-off is at 3:30 p.m. On Thursday, April 28, Royal Bay hosts St. Margaret’s for a 3:30 p.m. start.

On the junior side, the Belmont girls host Oak Bay at Goudy Field at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 26 before playing their final game against Reynolds on Thursday, April 28. The 3:30 p.m. tilt is also at Goudy Field.

Senior boys rugby action returns April 28 when Royal Bay heads to Stelly’s for a 3:45 p.m. game. In junior boys’ play, Belmont hosts Esquimalt at 3:45 p.m. Wednesday, April 27.

Week 4 of senior girls’ 15s rugby play has Belmont hosting Glenlyon Norfolk School and Esquimalt today (April 22). Games start at 3 p.m. On Monday, April 25, Belmont visits Edward Milne in Sooke, along with Mt. Douglas/Reynolds and Vic High. Looking ahead to April 29, Belmont plays host to five local teams, including Vic High, SMUS, Mt. Douglas/Reynolds, Spectrum and Stelly’s. Games get underway at 3:45 p.m.

In B.C. Premier Baseball League play, the Victoria Eagles start the week at home tomorrow (April 23), hosting the Whalley Chiefs in a double-header at Lambrick Park. First pitch is at noon, with Game 2 scheduled to start at 2:30 p.m. On Sunday, April 24, the Premier Eagles head to North Shore for a double-header against the Twins.

Meanwhile the Victoria Mariners start their four-game BCPBL weekend on the road when they head to Abbotsford to take on the Cardinals on Saturday. Returning home Sunday, April 24, the Mariners host the Whalley Chiefs at Henderson Park, near the University of Victoria. Game 1 starts at 11 a.m. and Game 2 at 1:30 p.m.

In Junior Premier play, the Mariners host the Coquitlam Redlegs on Saturday at Henderson, with games scheduled for 1 and 3:30 p.m. Come Sunday, the Redlegs visit the Junior Premier Eagles at Lambrick Park, with games scheduled for 11 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.
