Victoria Eagles Midget AAA baseball tryouts start Sunday with indoor sessions and team tryouts at Oak Bay Recreation Centre Jan. 8. For details, contact Don Wiebe at dwitv@shaw.ca or 250-883-5528.

High School basketball returns for Oak Bay senior boys Tuesday, Jan. 10 when St. Michaels University School hosts Oak Bay at 7:30 p.m. Also on Tuesday, the AAA Oak Bay senior girls head out to Claremont to play at 5:45 p.m.

In Div. 2 boys’ play, Glenlyon Norfolk School visits Stelly’s for a 7:30 p.m. tip-off Tuesday, Jan. 10, before visiting Esquimalt Thursday, also at 7:30 p.m.Div. 1 girls’ play has St. Michaels hosting Lambrick for a 5:45 p.m. start while the GNS girls visit Edward Milne Thursday, Jan. 12 at 5:45 p.m.

Lower Island women’s soccer hosts the annual All Star Game at Layritz turf Sunday, Jan. 8. Game 1 kicks off at 12 p.m. with players from Premier and Div. 1, home to the Oak Bay’s league-leading Castaways Highlanders FC, Bays United FC and Castaways FC. Game 2 goes at 2:30 p.m with players from Div. 2, 3 and Over 30s.

Victoria Field Hockey men’s league opens the new year Sunday, Jan. 8. Starting at 10:30 a.m., the Hawks play the Mutineers, the Rebels 1 team plays the Marauders at 12 p.m., and the Rebels 2 team plays the Tigers at 1:30 p.m. All games are played on the University of Victoria Vikes Field 1.

On the women’s side, Saturday brings a full slate of games with Lynx 3 kicking things off against the Devils at 9:30 a.m. at UVic’s Field 1. The Pirates face the Demons at 11 a.m., the Cardinals challenge Lynx 2 at 12:30 p.m. and the Patriots face Lynx 1 at 2 p.m.

Two local sports teams welcome your Christmas trees for chipping this weekend. The University of Victoria cross country teams will recycle trees for a donation Saturday, Jan. 7 and Sunday, Jan. 8 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Centennial Stadium. The Castaway Wanderers RFC also accepts your trees for donation, Jan. 7 and 8 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The annual service raises funds by donation to run programs for those aged 8 to 80.

Midget Tier 1 hockey heads into the last few weeks of regular season play with the Braves hosting two at home. The Braves host Cowichan Valley at 4 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 7 at Pearkes Arena, followed by Comox Valley Sunday, Jan. 8 at 4 p.m.

The Victoria Cougars take on the Saanich Junior Braves Friday, Jan. 6 at 6:30 at Pearkes arena. The Cougs return to home ice Thursday, Jan. 12, hosting Oceanside at 7 p.m. at Archie Browning arena. The game marks the Cougars’ last January home game so come fill the barn.
