Jock Talk: Rugby returns to Windsor Park Saturday

What's happening this week in Oak Bay sports action

Rugby returns to Windsor Park Saturday. In BC Rugby’s men’s Island Premier league, the Castaway Wanderers host UVic at 2:45 p.m. at Windsor Park, following the CW2’s tilt against UVic Norsemen, also at Windsor Park.

With the University of Victoria women’s soccer team on the road in Manitoba, the men’s team plays two games this weekend. On Friday, Oct. 21 the Vikes host Thompson Rivers at Centennial Stadium at 7:15 p.m. before finishing Oct. 22, hosting UBC Okanagan, with a 7:15 p.m. kick-off at Centennial Stadium.

While the Vikes women’s basketball team is away at the Ryerson Tournament, the men, just finishing their own tournament, return to host the Mount Royal Cougars Friday, Oct. 28 and Saturday, Oct. 29 at the CARSA gym.

In high school sports, the senior girls volleyball regular season is drawing to a close as playoffs approach. Games were still finishing at the time of writing, so the playoff schedule was still to be determined. Stay tuned to www.lowerislandschoolsports.ca for more details.

In senior boys volleyball, Oak Bay High competes at Vic High Wednesday, Oct. 26 when they take on the hosts, Reynolds and Spectrum at 6 p.m.

St. Michaels University School is also playing Oct. 26 when they’re at Lambrick taking on the hosts, Claremont and Belmont at 6 p.m.

Senior boys soccer continues in Oak Bay this week starting on Tuesday, Oct. 25 when the Bays play at St. Andrews at 3:20 p.m. The same day, Glenlyon Norfolk School plays at Mt. Doug at 3:30 p.m. and SMUS plays at Royal Bay at 3:45 p.m.

Later in the week, Thursday, Oct. 27, Oak Bay plays at GNS at 3:45 p.m. and SMUS hosts Claremont, with a 3:45 p.m. kick-off.

Beaver Lake plays host this week to the High School Cross Country Island Championships Wednesday, Oct. 26. Events start at 3:45 p.m., with the final event taking place at 4:05 p.m. Come cheer on your school’s runners in the Island finals!

The Victoria Royals start their week at home on Friday, Oct. 21 when they host the Swift Current Broncos at 7:05 p.m. at Save-on-Foods Memorial Centre. The boys in blue hit the ice again Saturday, Oct. 22, when they host the Everett Silvertips at 7:05, also at Save-on -Foods, before hitting the road Oct. 25 to. 29.

The Victoria Cougars return to their home barn for two games this week. On Sunday, Oct. 23, the Cougars host the Nanaimo Buccaneers at Archie Browning Rink at 3:30 p.m. The Cougs return to the ice Thursday, Oct. 27 to host the Westshore Wolves at 7 p.m.

For more hockey from Oak Bay, the Saanich Braves Midget Tier 1 team, which includes rep players from Oak Bay and Victoria, heads to Panorama Arena Saturday, Oct. 22 to take on Peninsula Midget Tier 2 at 3:20 p.m.
