The Victoria Grizzlies, who host the Nanaimo Clippers for the opening two games of their B.C. Hockey League playoff series tonight (March 3) and tomorrow at 7 p.m. at The Q Centre are hosting a number of hockey camps this spring.
Peewee and bantam-level showcase camps run March 25 and 26 and April 1 and 2, respectively. An ID and evaluation camp for anyone born from 1998 to 2002 also hits the ice April 7 to 9. For information and prices visit victoriagrizzlies.com/camps.
With the Westshore Wolves taking on the Victoria Cougars in a Vancouver Island Junior Hockey League’s South Division best-of-seven first-round playoff series at time of writing, the balance of this week’s games are uncertain.
Games 4 and 5 were scheduled for Wednesday and Thursday, respectively, after the Gazette’s print deadline time (watch goldstreamgazette.com for up to date results). If the series moves into a sixth game, it will be played tomorrow (March 4) at 4:30 p.m. at The Q Centre. The puck would drop for Game 7 at 3:30 p.m. on Sunday at Archie Browning Arena.
With lacrosse season on the horizon, the Victoria Shamrocks announced a women’s box lacrosse day camp for Saturday, March 18 at Eagle Ridge Arena from 4 to 8 p.m. Heighten your skills, have fun and scrimmage with Shamrocks coaches and players. The camp is limited to women age 15 and older but is open to people at all skill levels.
The Shamrocks’ annual spring break lacrosse camp hosted by Rhys Duch is also coming up March 20 to 22, giving kids age seven to 14 the opportunity to improve their skills, have fun and play with Shamrocks players including Duch, Corey Small, Cody Hagedorn and others. The camp, also being held at Eagle Ridge Arena, will be broken up into age groups – kids seven to 10 play from 9 a.m. to noon and those age 11 to 14 play from 12:30 to 3:30 p.m. Register at 250-478-7625 or victoriashamrocks.com.
Turning to the rugby pitch, men’s Div. 1 and 2 Island league play returns with the Westshore 2 team hosting Nanaimo 2 at 1 p.m. tomorrow (March 4), followed by Westshore 1 against Nanaimo 1 at 2:30 p.m. Both games are at the Juan de Fuca fields.
In high school rugby, the senior boys get underway next Tuesday, March 7. An all-West Shore match-up sees Belmont visiting Royal Bay at 3:45 p.m. Royal Bay is again in action next Thursday, when the boys head to Spectrum.
In Vancouver Island Soccer League action, the Div. 2 Westcastle United men take on the Prospect Lake Lakers at 8 p.m. on Friday, March 10. Come cheer on the men when they hit the Layritz Turf.
In South Island women’s soccer, playoffs are underway. The Doug Day Cup has Juan de Fuca United Div. 1 facing Gorge FC Div. 1 tonight at 8 p.m. The field was still being determined at press time. Visit liwsa.com for updates.
And on Sunday, Juan de Fuca FC Div. 1 is on the road to face Castaways FC Div. 2 at 2:15 p.m. at Carnarvon Park.
