From the pitch to the hardwood, it’s a full weekend of sports action at the University of Victoria.

The UVic women’s soccer team hits their home pitch this afternoon (Friday, Oct. 14) when they host Fraser Valley University at 5 p.m. at Centennial Stadium. With the weekend’s expected storm, the Vikes’ Saturday game against the Trinity Western Spartans has moved to Sunday at 2 p.m., also at Centennial Stadium.

With the UVic men’s basketball team away in Ottawa for the House-Laughton Tournament, the UVic women take spotlight. Gearing up for the Ryerson Tournament, Oct. 21 to 23 in Toronto, the Vikes women host the Windsor Lancers on Friday, Oct. 14. Tip off is at 7 p.m. at CARSA.

The UVic women’s field hockey team is also in action this weekend, hosting the University of Calgary Dinos in a doubleheader Saturday, Oct. 15 and Sunday, Oct. 16. Both games will take place at UVic at 11 a.m.

The UVic men’s soccer team is away this weekend before returning to play at home on Friday, Oct. 21 when the Vikes host Thompson Rivers at Centennial Stadium at 7:15 p.m. On Saturday, Oct. 22, the Vikes take on the UBC Okanagan Heat, also at Centennial Stadium at 7:15 p.m.

High school play brings senior girls volleyball action Tuesday, Oct. 19.

Oak Bay visits St. Michaels University School to take on the host team and Claremont Secondary. On the same day, Glenlyon Norfolk School heads to Victoria High School to face Vic High and Mt. Douglas. Games start at 6 p.m.

Senior boys volleyball brings SMUS, Royal Bay and Mt. Doug to Oak Bay High on Wednesday, Oct. 19, with games opening at 6 p.m.

In high school soccer on Tuesday, Oct. 18, Oak Bay hosts SMUS at 3:30 p.m. and GNS plays at Claremont at 3:20 p.m. On Thursday, Oct. 20, Oak Bay visits Claremont for a 3:20 p.m. kick-off.

District runners head to Beaver Lake Thursday, Oct. 20 for the high school cross country competition. Events start at 3:45 p.m. with the final event hitting the start line at 4:05 p.m. Come show enthusiasm to support your school runners.

In Oak Bay rugby action, the Div. 1 Castaways head to James Bay to take on their cross-town rivals with a 1 p.m. kick-off, before the premier men hit the pitch at 2:45 p.m.

The University of Victoria Norsemen head to the West Shore to face the Valhallians, also at 1 p.m.

In women’s play, the premier Castaways host Cowichan at Windsor Park, with a 1 p.m. kick-off.

In Vancouver Island Junior Hockey action, the Victoria Cougars start their week on the road Friday Oct. 14 when they head to Pearkes Rec Centre to take on the Saanich Braves. The puck drops at 6:30 p.m.

Continuing on the road, the Cougars head up Island to take on the Oceanside Generals Saturday, Oct. 15 before returning to home ice on Thursday, Oct. 20 when they host the Comox Valley Glacier Kings at Archie Browning Arena. Game time is at 7:30 p.m.

Calling all cyclists! This weekend Tripleshot Cycling, one of B.C.’s largest all-age cycling clubs, invites cyclists of all ages and abilities to explore backcountry trails in Greater Victoria on Sunday, Oct. 16, while supporting youth cycling and the development of south Vancouver Island trail systems.

The course, appropriate for cyclocross or mountain bike riders, starts and finishes at the Westin Bear Mountain Resort and winds through the Highlands, Hartland Mountain Bike Park, Camosun College, Francis King and Thetis Lake Regional Parks and some private property that owners are opening up for the day.
