JOCK TALK: Viewing options abound for sports fans

Shamrocks, Daffodil Cup sprint car racing and more slated for upcoming week

After securing a first-place finish in the Western Lacrosse Association and a first-round playoff matchup against Burnaby, the Victoria Shamrocks return home to The Q Centre tonight (Aug. 12) for game 3 in their series against the Lakers. Start time is early, 6 p.m. If needed, the next home games versus Burnaby would happen Wednesday, Aug. 17 at 7:45 p.m. and Sunday, Aug. 21 at 6 p.m.

Shamrocks fans interested in becoming new season ticket holders next year can hold their seat throughout the 2016 playoffs with a $75 deposit towards their 2017 seats. Contact the team office at 250-478-7625 or visit victoriashamrocks.com for details.

Following last week’s Victoria International Six‑a‑Side Cricket Festival at Windsor and Beacon Hill parks, Saturday (Aug. 13) brings a return to Greater Victoria league action, with Metchosin visiting United at noon at Beacon Hill.

In football, Westshore Rebels hit the road this week and next, playing in Kamloops tomorrow and Chilliwack on Aug. 20. The Rebels return home to host the Valley Huskers on Aug. 27.

Racing fans can head to Western Speedway for the P&R Western Star Daffodil Cup Weekend tonight and Saturday. Watch the NSRA winged sprint cars as they battle for the Cup, supported both nights by the Richlock Rentals sprint cars, Old Timers Racing Association and dwarf cars. Qualifying is at 5:30 with racing at 6:30 p.m.

Then on Wednesday, Aug. 17, the speedway hosts the Marlin Motors Hornet Series. For tickets and other information visit westernspeedway.net.

Woman2Warrior, a women’s charity 5K obstacle adventure race, is coming up Aug. 28 at West Shore Parks & Recreation. Tackle more than a dozen obstacles designed to challenge strength, agility, balance and endurance. Register at victoria.woman2warrior.ca.

This week has brought a return of sports action to the University of Victoria. Following an exhibition hoops game between the Vikes women and the University of Wisconsin Badgers on Monday,  the men’s basketball Vikes play the Charlotte 49ers at CARSA (Centre for Athletics, Recreation and Special Abilities) at 7 p.m. Monday, Aug. 15.

On Friday, Aug. 19 the men’s soccer team hosts Langara at Centennial Stadium at 8 p.m. The UVic women’s soccer team also debuts next week, hosting Peninsula (Wash.) College on Thursday, Aug. 18 at 3 p.m. and Langara on Sunday, Aug. 21 at noon. Both games will be played at Centennial Stadium.

And with the 2016 Summer Olympics continuing, come cheer on the athletes at the Bear Mountain Resort Fan Zone. Olympic coverage continues through Aug. 21.
