Basketball returns to Oak Bay in a big way this week.
Boys’ high school basketball returns to the hardwood Monday, Jan. 16 when the Oak Bay boys host Claremont at 7:30 p.m. Play continues Thursday, Jan. 17 when the Bays host the Parkland at 7:30 p.m.
In girls’ basketball, Oak Bay hosts the Spectrum girls at 5:45 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 17.
The Vancouver Island men’s soccer league’s Bays United Liquor Plus hosts SFFC Harris Victoria at 8 p.m. tonight (Friday, Jan. 13) in a rescheduled game at the Oak Bay turf.
On the women’s side, Oak Bay’s premier and Div. 1 teams continue their winter break, but Div. 3 action takes Bays United FC to face Vic West at the Victor Brodeur field.
The Victoria Cougars hit the road this week, heading up Island to take on the Kerry Park Islanders Tuesday, Jan. 17. Continuing up Island, the Cougars play the Nanaimo Buccaneers Thursday, Jan. 19 before finishing in Oceanside where they face the Generals Saturday, Jan. 21.
The Victoria Royals are back at home for two games this week before a five-game roadtrip. They Royals return to home ice Friday, Jan. 13, hosting the Kelowna Rockets at 7:05 p.m. at Save-on-Foods Memorial Centre. On Saturday, Jan. 14, the boys in blue take on the Moose Jaw Warriors at 7:05 p.m. at Save-on-Foods. The Royals’ next home game is Jan. 28.
Coming off two wins last weekend over Cowichan Valley and Comox Valley, the Braves Midget Tier 1 hockey squad heads to the Port Alberni Saturday. Come Sunday, follow the team to Panorama Rec Centre and cheer on the local midgets as they face off against Peninsula. The puck drops at 2:30 p.m.
Hockey fans can keep the action going with the Greater Victoria Minor Ball Hockey League, with divisions for players up to age 18. Register by Sunday, Jan. 15; assessments are scheduled to start Feb. 20.
Victoria-Esquimalt Lacrosse, which also serves players from Oak Bay, has opened registration for the coming season. Teams serve players from mini-tykes (born 2011 – 2012) to midget (born 2001 – 2002).

In Victoria men’s field hockey, Sunday, Jan. 15 has the Rebel’s 2 team taking on Rebels 1 at 10:30 a.m., the Marauders facing the Mutineers at 12 p.m., and the Hawks taking on the Tigers at 1:30 p.m. On Sunday, Jan. 22, Rebels 1 team plays the Mutineers at 9 a.m., the Tigers take on the Marauders at 10:30 a.m., and the Hawks face the Rebels 2 team at 1:30 p.m. All games take place on UVic Field 1.
Early registration is under way for the Oak Bay Half Marathon, 10K and Relay, hitting the streets or Oak Bay Sunday, May 28. Early-bird fees continue to March 15.
