Nik Federko of West Kelowna won the Zone 2 Junior Golf championship last weekend at Gallagher’s Canyon in Kelowna.
The Two Eagles golfer carded a final round 71 Sunday for a two-day score of 144, two shots ahead of Kamloops Rivershore’s Wyatt Brook (146). Gallagher’s Canyon’s Matt Hopley, 15, finished third at 151 (73-78).
As well as winning the championship, Federko earned a berth on the Zone 2 team that will represent the Thompson-Okanagan at the B.C Junior boys tourney, July 4-7, at the Squamish Valley Golf Club. Joining him on the team will be Brook, Hopley and Vernon’s Ryley Johnson.
Brook won the 2017 season Order of Merit with 377.5 points. Hopley was second with 315.5, while Federko was third at 312.5. Johnson was fourth at 268.
Parker Wadsworth of Vernon grabbed a share of fourth place in the Tour championship at 78-75-153. Wadsworth finished fifth in the order of merit with 251 points.
George Wilkins of Lake Country (Predator Ridge) shot 78-75-153 to tie Wad
sworth. Wilkins ended up sixth with 239 points.
Johnson tied Braeden Cooper of Vernon for seventh spot, both players shooting 83-74-157.
Brandon Chai of Coldstream fashioned 80-80-160, while Jaden Steinke of Vernon produced 89-74-163 and Max Lockwood of Vernon carded 83-83-166.
Cooper was the low VSS Panther at 76-83 at the B.C. Senior AAA Golf Championships at Ledgeview in Abbotsford.
The Panthers, who were 15th last year, finished 12th. Steinke went 82-76, Elias Wery was 83-82, Lockwood shot 90-88 and Erik Colwell was 98-87.
Kelowna Golf and Country Club’s Tiegan Taylor captured the girls title with rounds of 81-77-158. Kelowna’s Emma Sabbagh was second at 171.
The B.C. junior girls championship is set for July 4-7 at Kelowna’s Okanagan Golf Club.
Ryan Vest, 10, of Vernon won the Maple Leaf Golf Tour’s Pee Wee Boys division title Monday at the Hazelmere Golf and Tennis Club in Surrey.
Vest shot 79-82-161 to beat Ryan Burns, 11, of Abbotsford by four strokes.
“I am really happy to get the win this weekend; my game was not as sharp as it has been recently but I was able to hang on and get the win,” said Vest.
More than 100 juniors also attended a Ford Go Golf? clinic courtesy of Dams Ford Lincoln.
The next two MJT stops are the MJT Ford Series at Predator Ridge Golf Resort in Vernon on July 24-25, followed by the three-day MJT Odlum Brown Classic-PGA of BC Junior Championship at Northview Golf Club in Surrey from Aug. 8-10.
