Brad Jones of Vernon won the Kamloops City Championship Zone 2 junior event last weekend at the Kamloops Golf and Country Club.

Jones, who plays out of Predator Ridge Resort while working the back shop at Vernon Golf & CC, carded 69-74-143 for a seven-stroke victory over Lionel Taylor of Kelowna Golf & CC (72-78-150).

A graduate of the Vernon Christian School, Jones posted nines of 34-35 on Day 1 in rain and wind, earning birdies on three of the first five holes. He went 37-37 in the final round.

“The course is only 6,500 yards so it’s relatively short and super tight,” said Jones, the assistant referee assigner for Vernon minor hockey. “I hit my driver only six times all weekend. Just hit a lot of irons and three-woods off the tees and then hit smart second shots just to the middle of greens. I hit around 15 greens both days.”

Nick Corno of Kamloops Golf & CC was third at 80-74-154, followed by Christian Lacasse of Vernon Golf & CC at 77-78-155 and defending champion Adam Struch of The Dunes in Kamloops at 78-78-156.

“It was a special win just because it was my last ever junior event (he turns 19 Saturday) and it kind of put the cap on a special junior career for me which included playing for Team Canada West in 2010 when I was 16,” said Jones.

His summer schedule includes the Ogopogo Tournament in Kelowna, the B.C. Amateur in Pitt Meadows and then a few men’s events in the Kootenays when he spends time at the family summer home.
