Four young curlers are hurrying hard on the way to nationals to showcase Juan de Fuca talent.
Team De Jong heads to the Tim Horton’s Junior National Championships in Liverpool, Nova Scotia, from Jan. 18 to 26 to represent B.C.
“They are very good shot makers,” said Don Rugg, vice president of the Juan de Fuca Curling Centre Association. “Cameron (De Jong) has been to provincials before, but this is the first time I can remember we’ve had a team make it to nationals.”
The team’s flights and accommodation are covered by the Canadian Curling Association and the team received some sponsorship from Curl B.C., said Rugg.
The foursome of Cameron de Jong, skip, Brook Calibaba, third, Ryan Cassidy, second, and Alex Horvath, first, won
the Junior Men’s Coastal Playdown in Coquitlam, Nov. 29 to Dec. 1. That win earned them a spot at provincial championships in Chilliwack from Dec. 26 to 31.
All four players curl with both Victoria Curling Club and Juan de Fuca Curling Club.
Cassidy and Horvath, both 15, have been curling out of the JDF rink since they were eight years old.
