The Penticton Curling Club is hosting the B.C. Junior Zone Playdowns Saturday and Sunday.

There will be five boys and three girls teams competing. Penticton will be represented by a boy’s rink.

“I think that the level of play will be pretty high for juniors,” said Penticton coach Sherrie Burechailo. “I know there are some great coaches coming. I expect to see some great teams.”

The Penticton rink has been together since the end of October and Burechailo sees the group growing confidence in their game.

“They have learned a lot of new skills so far this year,” said Burechailo, who has worked with them a lot to bring them up to a level she hopes is competitive.

Burechailo said the local club was selected by Curl B.C. to host and felt it was important to have a team representing the community. Should they be successful, the Penticton rink can qualify for provincials in Parksville Dec.28 to Jan.3.

The draws are at 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. on Saturday. Semifinal play begins at 10:30 a.m. Sunday with finals at 2 p.m.

The club held its  Keldon Electric Penticton Ladies Bonspiel last weekend. The bonspiel attracted 14 teams from the Okanagan Valley. Winning the A division was the Leitch rink, Lil Blashko won the B division and Jenna Denton’s rink took the C division.
