Juniors vying for first victory

The Nanaimo Timbermen lost a pair of home games on the weekend to fall to last place in the B.C. Junior A Lacrosse League.

The Nanaimo Timbermen junior A lacrosse team thinks it’s overdue for its first win.

The squad (0-4) lost a pair of home games on the weekend to fall to last place in the B.C. Junior A Lacrosse League.

Nanaimo dropped a 12-7 decision Saturday to the New Westminster Salmonbellies, then fell 8-7 the next day to the Port Coquitlam Saints. Both games were at Frank Crane Arena.

The game against the Bellies was tied halfway through and the game against the Saints was a back-and-forth affair. Timbermen player Ryan Nicks said his team should have won both games and said the T-men played “pretty bad” against the Saints.

“We came out slow in every period and we threw the ball away a lot,” he said.

The Nanaimo team believes the offence hasn’t yet found a groove.

“We have the talent to score, we’re just not putting the ball in the net,” Nicks said.

Timbermen assistant coach Jamie Gilles said it all starts with tracking down loose balls.

“You can’t score if you don’t have possession,” he said. “Because we were playing without the ball so much, when our offence did have it, we weren’t playing a patient offence.”

Against New West, Mitch Parker had two goals and two assists and Marino Best also scored twice. Corey Shires, Nicks and Paul Brebber were the other scorers and Pete Dubenski made 48 saves.

Versus PoCo, Brebber and Shires had two-goal games and Parker, Tyson Roe and Brett Fleming also scored. Dubenski made 30 saves in defeat.

GAME ON … Nanaimo hosts the Victoria Shamrocks on Wednesday (May 9) at 7 p.m. at Frank Crane Arena. Admission at the door is $10 for adults or $5 for seniors, students and children.
