Vernon speedskater Connie Kapak ended her season and her Vernon career in style.
The 15-year-old Vernon Secondary School Grade 9 student won the Western Canadian short track championship in her age class for the third year in a row in Lethbridge.
Kapak, who, along with her father/chauffeur, Pete, is moving to Calgary this summer to pursue her speedskating dreams, won three golds in four individual distances.
She also captured a bronze in a team relay in the T2T 14 female division in Lethbridge.
Kapak finished with 3,543 points, more than 600 points ahead of the runner-up, Cassidy Peterson of Alberta.
Rosalyn Carr of Kelowna finished fifth in the division with 1,745 points.
Nicole Meeks of Langley was seventh and Elissa Romero of Port Coquitlam placed 12th.
One of the highlights of the Western Canadians for Kapak came when she had a chance to meet Canadian long track star Gilmore Junio at the event’s windup banquet.
Junio gained international fame during the Sochi Olympics when he gave up his spot in a race to Canadian teammate Denny Morrison of Fort St. John, B.C.
Morrison went on to win a medal in the race.
