Vernon speed skater Connie Kapak produced two medals at the Canadian Long Track Championships in Quebec City last weekend.

The event was held at an outdoor oval so skaters faced major adjustments regarding strong winds and freezing temperatures.

Kapak, 15, was part of the 12-member Team B.C.,  aged 11 to 15.

Kapak was the only skater from the southern part of B.C., with others hailing from northern regions which allow for access to long track training facilities.

She placed fifth overall, out of 16 skaters in her age group, earning bronze medals in the 2,000-metre (2K) pursuit and the 3,000 (3K) timed event.

Kapak’s previous best result at this event was fourth overall, last year, in Winnipeg. This is the first time she has received multiple medals at long track nationals.

Team B.C. is coached by Jason Hartleb, head coach of the Nelson speed skating club.
