Members of the Fernando Correia School of Karate and Lake Cowichan Shito-Ryu Karate outdid themselves during the island championships at the Island Savings Centre.

“It was a great success and we had a total of 135 competitors competing from around all of Vancouver Island and some from as far as the Vancouver region,’’ noted Loretta Schwab, spokesperson for the clubs.

“Everyone had a wonderful time, as usual. The tournament started on time and ended on time. The students from FCSK and also from the Lake Cowichan Shito-Ryu Karate dojo did an outstanding job representing their schools. They all received medals which is extraordinary.’’

First-time competitors all now want to go to another tournament. First-timers from Lake Cowichan who placed in the medal standings were: Alexa Gauthier-Valdes, Shoshannah Ritco, Alex Sawatzky, Meaghan McKechnie, Kyle McKechnie, Jada Hill and Jackson Hill.

Josh Hill, Jacob Marcelic and Madison Garbish have already been to a few tournaments and all three received silver medals or better.

Most of the FCSK students have participated in tournaments before but there were a few first-timers, including: Safiya Ditta, Aasim Ditta, Charlie Morris, Page Hart and Stephen Robinson.

“This was an outstanding showing from both dojos and we are proud that our students did so well,’’ said Schwab.
