Two members of the provincial champion KSS Owls senior boys team were instrumental in leading Team B.C. to a bronze medal finish at the Basketball Canada’s U17 national basketball championship.
Guard Mason Bourcier and forward Grant Shephard helped B.C. to a 92-74 victory over Manitoba in Saturday’s third place game in Winnipeg.
Bourcier, who was named a first-team all-Canadian at the tournament, scored 15 points added 10 assists to lead Team B.C. in the bronze medal game.
The 6-foot-9 Shephard, a second all-star team selection at nationals, had 11 points and eight rebounds against Manitoba.
In five games at nationals, Bourcier averaged 13 points per game and was third overall with six assists per game.
Shephard averaged 12.4 points per game and 8.2 rebounds.
The two Kelowna players were named to Team B.C. following a selection camp in April.
Bourcier and Shephard were both key contributors in the Owls’ gold medal victories last season at both the B.C. 4A boys championship in Langley and the Interior Western Canada Basketball Tournament in Kelowna.
Bourcier, who will turn 17 this month, is returning to KSS this fall for his senior season with the Owls.
Shephard, 17, has plans to attend a prep school this winter in Florida.
