Kelowna duo wins Baron Insurance title

Lynda Palahniuk and Melanie Grant carded an even-par 72 Saturday to win the 26th Baron Insurance Ladies Open.

The Kelowna duo of Lynda Palahniuk and Melanie Grant carded an even-par 72 Saturday to win the 26th Baron Insurance Ladies Open at the Vernon Golf & Country Club.

Palahniuk and Grant have won the best-ball tournament low gross title eight times, including four straight starting in 2009.

Joan Hokanson and Joan Scholinder of Salmon Arm took the overall low net championship.

Denise Vines and Barb Gould of Shannon Lakes in West Kelowna took second low gross with a 79, by retrogression over Karen Hassard and Karen Kindrachuk of Vernon.

Karen Mair Valin and Cathy Brugger of Rivershore in Kamloops were fourth low gross at 80, followed by Marianne Radcliffe and Kathy Richdale of Sunset Ranch in Kelowna, at 84.

Maureen Turner and Monica Jarvis of Predator Ridge finished sixth low gross with an 85, winning on a countback over Gail Henri and Sue Mullen of the Players Club, Karen Packalen and Lynda Yachimec of Talking Rock near Sorrento, Trudy Walker and Joanne Keis of Vernon and Diane Madden (Predator) and Laurie Arthur of Spallumcheen.

Nancy Kurbis and Jane Hackman of Vernon were 11th low gross at 86.

Second low net winners were Myrna Cleavely and Shirley Brown of Vernon, followed by Dawn Taplay and Leanne Foster of the Okanagan Club at 63 and Nancy Gray and Linda McCann of Salmon Arm at 64.

Rae Jensen and Maria Smith of Vernon placed fifth low net with 66, while Wendy Robinson and Linda Irwin of Vernon took sixth at 67 by countback over Vernon twosomes Connie Traxel and Janice Allen, Rosemarie Rachwalski and Barb D’Orazio, Jackie Jones and Gloria Willms and Lisa Krushen and Geri Longworth. Also at 67 were Norma Lemiski of Vernon and Sherryl Bissell of Spall.

Palahniuk, on the third hole, Sholinder, on No. 5, Sandi Roberts, on the 14th and Heather Farris on the 17th, took KPs.

Deuces were recorded by Sholinder (2), Ann Fry and Bissell.

Vernon hosts the B.C. Senior Women’s Golf Championships starting Tuesday. The 54-hole tournament features mid-master players (age 40+), seniors (50+) and super seniors (60+).
