The medals they won at the female midget tier 1 provincials may be silver, but a group of Kelowna midget female hockey players showed they had hearts of gold in a cinderella run all the way to the final of the midget tier 1 provincials in Salmon Arm.
The Kelowna midget tier 1 Rockets arrived at provincials as a young club hoping they could put in a respectable and competitive tournament and left bearing silver medals after a week of intense competition.
Kelowna fell 6-1 to Richmond in the provincial final this week as the veteran-laden Richmond club completed a perfect week without a loss.
The Rockets lost just three times all week: Twice to Richmond and once to the host Salmon Arm club but for the most part played a stellar tournament.
The team began the five day tournament on Monday with a 2-1 win over Vancouver Island, setting the tone for the week.
Then came two straight losses to Richmond and Salmon Arm before the tide turned in a 10-1 win over Whitehorse.
Kelowna would then shutout Windermere Valley by a 2-0 count setting the stage for what was a must win against Surrey that saw the Rockets play a relentless and intense game and come out on top 2-1 advancing to the tournament final against Richmond.
Kelowna scored the first goal of the final but saw Richmond score six unanswered goals to earn the win.
