Kelowna fighter Matt Dwyer of Toshido MMA is one step closer to realizing his dream of competing in the UFC.
Dwyer, 24, continued his winning ways last weekend by defeating 10-time UFC veteran Demarques Johnson at Battlefield Fight League 30 at the River Rock Casino in Richmond.
The bout was in jeapordy, when Johnson, who fights out of Salt Lake City, Utah, came in almost 10 pounds over the agreed upon weight class.
However Dwyer decided to move up a weight class and take on the crafty veteran.
The first round was a back and forth war with both fighters landing some big punches while the second round saw Dwyer taking control, landing some massive ground and pound, forcing the referee to stop the bout at 3:30 of round 2.
“These are the exact kind of fights the UFC likes to see,” said Toshido MMA head coach David Lea. “This is the second UFC veteran Matt has finished in a row, which is what you need to do to get your shot in the big leagues”.
If Dwyer gets the call from the UFC, he will be joining other Toshido MMA alumni Rory MacDonald and Sarah Moras who are currently part of the UFC roster.
