Kelowna golfers pick up season-ending honours

Maple Leaf junior tour recognizes local players for strong 2013

A trio of junior golfers from Kelowna have been signaled out with awards or scholarships from the Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour (MJT).

Kelowna’s Steven Lee was one of four players across Canada that was named a 2013 MJT Cleveland Golf Player of the Year, as the most consistent finisher across the nation in the junior boys category (17 to 19).

Player of the year awards were handed out using scoring averages over a minimum number of MJT tournaments.  Lee also won some international event funding from the tour.

One of the players on the MJT tour who benefitted from $1,000 scholarship was Lauren Rutherglen of Kelowna, who was a joint winner of the MJT Cleveland Golf Canada Scholarship

The MJT is also distributing up to $12,000 among all the provincial MJT Cleveland Golf Order of Merit age-division winners who attend the MJT Boston Pizza National Tour Championship at Reunion Resort in Florida earlier this month Madison Kapchinsky of Kelowna was one of the winners from B.C.

The Boston Pizza-presented Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour is considered one of Canada’s number one-played junior tour and the ‘Road to College Golf’ for aspiring young players

With the golf season coming to a close around the Okanagan Valley, two members at Sunset Ranch have ample reason to be excited for next year.

Sunset Ranch members Ron Steinhauer and Yvon Robichaud both sunk hole in ones in the last week at Sunset Ranch.

Last Thursday, Steinhauer took a sand-wedge to the box on the 120 yard par three eighth hole at Sunset, nailing a perfect shot that went in the cup and was witnessed by Tom MacMillan, Rick Everson and Dave Baker.

On Sunday, Robichaud grabbed his nine iron from 130 yards on the eighth hole and watching it end in the cup were witnesses Wynn Whitfield, Dave Caldow and Denis Schermann.
