The Kelowna Kodiaks laid claim to the Thompson Okanagan midget lacrosse title, sweeping the Kamloops Rattlers in the best-of-three final.
The A2 midget Kodiaks secured the championship on Saturday night with a hard-fought 3-2 victory in Kamloops.
In a stifling, hot conditions Kaiden Desmanais scored the game winner in a tight, defensive struggle.
Kristian Beech and Josh Dubrett also scored for Kelowna, while Quentin Fisk was a wall in goal for the Kodiaks.
Kelowna opened the series July 9 at home with a 6-3 win, as Calvin Rout, Brandon Gaucher, Jameson Murray, Cole Koski, Kyle Durec and Josh Dubrett supplied the scoring.
The Kodiaks’ record is 15-5 to date this season.
Many of the players have a busy two weeks ahead as half the team will be representing the Thompson Okanagan at the B.C. Summer Games in both field and box Lacrosse.
Keaton Brownlee, Josh Dubrett and Ryan Hughes, all born in 1999, will be traveling to Nanaimo with the Zone 2 field team, while ’98 born players Quintin Fisk, Matthew Blanchard, Kristian Beech and Kyle Durec will play for the box team July 17 to 20.
James Alexander would have been the ninth local player to compete at the Games, but is instead committed to Team B.C.
Those players will stay on the island and will be joined by the rest of the team to participate in the B.C. midget playdowns from July 24 to 27 in Campbell River.
Other members of the team are: Mason Salway, Austin Pommier, Lucas Devries, James Alexander, Quinn Stanhope, Kieran McKay.
Players Jameson Murray, Cole Koski, Scott McIvor, Taylor Cooper and Nick Piato from the midget 2 team will also be joining the team for provincials.
Peewees champs…
The Kelowna peewee A2 team is celebrating the Okanangan lacrosse title after defeating Penticton in straight games last weekend in the league final.
The win qualifies the local boys for the provincial championship beginning on Friday in Richmond.
