KELOWNA – Trailing 3-0 after just eight minutes of play, the Kelowna Rockets’ unbeaten start to the Western Hockey League season looked to be in jeopardy.
But on a night when anything seemed possible at Prospera Place, the Rockets rallied for a 7-5 win Wednesday over the visiting Vancouver Giants for their fourth straight victory — and one of the best starts in team history.
Nine of the 12 goals were scored on special teams, with each club notching three powerplay markers before 5,021 fans.
Captain Madison Bowey scored twice for the Rockets, both shorthanded markers — the last into an empty net — and added three assists.
Giants’ captain Dalton Sward also scored shorthanded, as the Giants led 3-0 after 20 minutes against the lethargic-looking Rockets.
The Rockets answered with three second-period goals and three more in the third for a 6-3 lead, before Vancouver made the proceedings interesting with a pair of PP goals from Jackson Houck late in the third period.
Nick Merkley and Rourke Chartier each had a goal and as assist for the Rockets who have outscored their opponents 27-9 in four games this season.
