The Kelowna Skating Club turned in many strong performances in Kamloops last weekend, as 34 local skaters took part in the 2014 Super Series Autumn Leaves event.
This was the third BC and Yukon Super Series event of the season, hosting the majority of the province’s top competitive skaters.
Strong performances in nearly all categories factored into a total haul of 20 medals.
A weekend highlight occurred in the Pre-Novice Women under-14 division, as 11-year-old Olivia Gran landed 4 double axels and 4 triple jumps through her 2 segments for a Canadian-high score of 104.40 points and the gold medal. Kelowna’s Rochelle Reeve won the silver medal in the field of 22 skaters.
More strong Canadian scores were posted in the Novice Women’s division, as Rachel Pettitt scored 109.92 for the victory, while Ajsha Gorman scored a personal-best 105.49 for a silver medal finish in the 16-skater field.
Kelowna skaters ranked just as well at the top levels, as Jayda Jurome and Julianne Delaurier finished 1-2 in Senior Women, while Cailey England and Kelly Basisty struck gold in Junior Women and Junior Men, respectively.
Kelowna’s Abbey Reiter won the silver medal in Junior Silver medal in an inspired return to competition. Reiter, 14, had been sidelined for over a year due to a serious knee injury that resulted from an on-ice collision during a training session.
Meanwhile, in the Pre-Juvenile and Juvenile divisions, Ashley Sales (gold), Alexis Garost (gold), Vienna Harwood (gold), Madeline Foley (gold), Summer Peitsch (silver), Carson Consiglio (silver), Alyssa Dobbs (silver), and Daria Carr (bronze) had podium finishes.
The Kelowna contingent had success at the grassroots levels as well, as Emily Sales and Mackenzie Nelmes finished first and second, respectively, in STAR 5 Girls under-10, while Zoe Wu finished third in group 2 of STAR 5 Girls under-13.
Next up for the Kelowna Skating Club will be the BC and Yukon Sectional Championships at Prince George in November, where skaters will be vying for Provincial titles and qualifying spots for the National Championships.
