he top mixed curling teams in the province will be on display when the Kelowna Curling Club hosts the 2015 B.C. Mixed Curling Championship next year.
The event, sponsored by AMJ Campbell Van Lines, will feature eight teams competing in a triple knockout draw with a four-team page playoff, from March 19 to 22.
The mixed teams, which feature two men and two women, will be battling for the right to travel to nationals in Toronto in November 2015.
Jock Tyre, Manager of Kelowna Curling Club, says he’s looking forward to welcoming the top mixed curlers in the province to Kelowna.
“We love the format because we get a lot of competitive curlers playing with their husbands or wives or friends and they have a good chance of making it to a national championship,” said Tyre.
“It is that old-style game where the social side is just as important as what happens on the ice.”
Curling season has wound down for most of the province at the moment, but in Kelowna, things are just about to kick off.
The club is hosting a Four Foot Curling Camp for adults on June 27 and 28, then a Canada Day Bonspiel from June 29 to July 1.
Curl BC’s Rockslide Summer Curling Camp for junior curlers takes place from July 2 to 5, followed by a junior bonspiel July 5 and 6.
Kelowna Curling Club is a popular Okanagan institution. The club has 12 sheets of ice – more than any other club in BC – and operates more than a dozen different leagues. The club has a large lounge and viewing area for spectators.
The B.C .Mixed Curling Championship first began in 1964 and was won by the Gil Moel rink from the Trail Curling Club. This event has hosted many of B.C.’s and Canada’s top curlers throughout its history. 1988 Olympic gold medalist Lindsay Sparkes, 2000 world men’s champion Bryan Miki, 2000 World Junior Men’s champion Brad Kuhn, 2002 Olympic bronze medalists Georgina Wheatcroft and Diane Dezura and 2009 World Senior Champions, Pat Sanders and Roselyn Craig are just a few of the event’s past winners.
