Kelsey Serwa is back.
In her fifth race this season since returning to competitive ski cross racing, the 26-year-old Kelowna native won a silver medal Sunday at an FIS World Cup event in San Candido, Italy.
Serwa, who has been battling for a spot in the finals this season, reached the podium for the 17th in her career.
It was her first medal after taking a year and a half off to recover from injury and attend university.
“The final heat was definitely the most challenging of the day,” said Serwa of the big final. “We all switched positions two or three times in an exciting final. I’m really happy with my finish. I finally stopped worrying about the other competitors and kept my head down, stayed calm and focused on what I wanted to achieve.”
First place belonged to the 2015 World Champion, Austria’s Andrea Limbacher. Serwa stole second from France’s Alizee Baron with a photo finish at the line.
Ski cross takes a break until the New Year with the Canadian Ski Cross team sitting in second position overall and the men’s team still hanging on to the number one ranking.
Since the season began, the teams have completed five events with four athletes reaching the podium a total of eight times.
