Kelowna athlete named to national ski cross team for Olympic Games

It’s official.

Kelowna’s Kelsey Serwa will compete for Canada for the second time at the Olympic Winter Games.

In what was merely a formality, Alpine Canada Monday named the 24-year-old Serwa to its six-member ski cross team for the 2014 games next month in Sochi, Russia.

Serwa , Marielle Thompson and Georgia Simmerling are the three women on the Canadian team, while the men will be represented by Dave Duncan, Chris Del Bosco and Brady Leman.

“Our team is heading to Sochi with fire in our hearts,” said Serwa, who placed fifth at the 2010 Olympic Games in Vancouver. “I know I’m not only speaking for myself when I say that we will do everything in our power to make our nation proud next month as we race for gold. We are winter, and we are competing to win.”

Serwa, the 2011 world and X Games champion, returned to the World Cup circuit this season after suffering serious injuries to her left knee in each of the last two years.

Serwa, who has 16 podium finishes in her World Cup career since 2009, won a silver medal last month in Italy.

She sat out the last two World Cup events of this season to prepare for Sochi.

Another Kelowna athlete, Eric Neilson, will compete in skeleton at the Olympic Games, which run Feb. 7 to 23.
