The Terrace Kermode senior boys basketball team won third place in a tough Lower Mainland tournament last Friday.
In the third place final, the Caledonia Senior Secondary team was head to head with West Vancouver, up only one point in the last minute of the game.
The Kermodes got the ball and battled the tight Vancouver defence, struggling to find a shot.
The bench started counting down as the shot clock dropped into the final seconds.
The shot clock was down to one second, when Jackson Netzel hit a double clutch three pointer, sealing the game with 59-54 victory for the Kermodes.
That win earned the boys third place at the Bob Gair Classic tournament in New Westminster, where eight Lower Mainland teams were contending.
The Kermodes started the tournament with a solid 83-36 victory against Richmond, where Kermode guard Weihao Zhou scored 14 points and won player of the game.
Next they faced Argyle from North Vancouver, losing 53-75 to the team who went on to claim first in the tournament.
In their third and final game against West Vancouver, which Netzel clinched with his three pointer, was a tight back-and-forth match for most of the game.
But early in the third period, West Vancouver took a ten point lead.
“I was proud of how my boys fought back,” said coach Joe Dominguez, adding that it helped to have Jalen Holland catch fire and score 11 points in just three minutes.
The Kermodes faced competition one level higher, playing ‘AAAA’ teams a step above their ‘AAA’ division.
Kermode guard Harvir Dhesi was named tournament all star.
“He was consistent throughout the weekend, defended well, and attacked the basket when we needed him to,” said Dominguez.
