Kickers host fundraising comedy night

An upcoming comedy night is more than just a fun night out - it's also an important fundraiser for the Comox Valley Kickers Rugby Club.

An upcoming comedy night is more than just a fun night out — it’s also an important fundraiser for the Comox Valley Kickers Rugby Club.

Hosted by the Kickers very own comedian, Erin Calder, the Thursday, Aug. 22 comedy show at Roy’s Towne Pub will raise money to offset costs for the 2019/20 rugby season. No Pads, No Helmets, Just Balls: A Comedic Fundraiser has Chris Griffin of Vancouver and Peter Hudson of Nanaimo headlining. Featured comedians include Cumberland’s Josh Lichti, and Dan Duvall and Carilynn Nicholson, both of Victoria.

The Kickers have teams for men, women, juniors and minis. Each season, the team fundraises to help cover travel, equipment costs, jerseys and other expenses.

Natalie Nguyen, captain of the Kickers women’s team, hopes the comedy night will be one of the club’s biggest fundraising events.

“We really need it. We want to subsidize the cost of playing, which will help to grow the sport here in the Comox Valley. Member dues cover insurance, referee costs, field rentals and not much more,” said Nguyen. “Vancouver Island Brewing will be doing a tap takeover and will be donating a portion of every VIB purchase back to the rugby club. There will also be a 50/50 draw. Along with ticket sales, we are optimistic that this will be not only a fun evening filled with laughs, but a notable fundraiser for the club.”

Roy’s Towne Pub is at 4000 Island Hwy S in Royston. Advance tickets are $15, or $20 at the door. Doors open at 5 p.m. The show starts at 6 p.m.
