If you’ve ever thought about what it would take to run five kilometres, Recreation Services has put together the perfect program to safely make this happen.
Recreation Services is now accepting registration for the beginner running program “KidSport Classic Training,” which starts Thursday, March 31 at 5 p.m.
The group started this training program in March of 1993. More than 700 people have participated over the past 18 years.
There are as many reasons why people take the program as individuals attending. Some register as a kick start to their summer running programs, some register to complete their first five kilometre run, while others want to lose weight.
The KidSport Classic Training program will meet at Thompson Rivers University this season.
A variety of routes and trails around the university will be explored.
John Youds, a seasoned runner, will be instructing the program with the help of volunteering running buddies.
You can expect some inspiration speakers during the first 15 minutes of each class.
Topics will include: building a safe, sustainable running program, foot assessment at Pro Physio Works, choosing the right running shoe, injury prevention and causes, stretching, running techniques, clothing and strength are some of the 13 topics being covered.
The program will begin with 30 seconds of running and 4.5 minutes of walking.
Gradually, over 13 weeks, participants will be running five kilometres and ready to participate in the KidSport Classic Run on June 26.
Wendy Engel, a past participant of the training program, described her experience as powerful; however, she said in the beginning it was difficult.
“One particular day, running on South Lakeside, a fellow participant and I felt the most glorious feeling ever,” she said.
“We felt powerful, like real runners. We knew and that we could complete the five-kilometre relay section of the run.
“This was a turning point for me. I went home with the most satisfying high I had experienced in decades.”
Catherine Thompson, who has take the training program a couple of times, said: “You are never too old to start this program.”
“I started the running program at a late age [40-plus] and had never ran a day in my life. My aim was to complete five kilometres and now, a few years later, I have finally done the half marathon (21 kilometres) through this program.
“It is a great way to keep fit and there is always someone there to help and encourage you all the way through the program.”
