KIJHL: Dynamiters and Thunder Cats crush Rockies

In Kimberley and Creston Valley, both games were off to rocky starts

After beating Fernie and Nelson a week earlier – two high-performing teams – the Rockies were crushed by Kimberley and Creston Valley.

Both games were off to rocky starts.

On Friday, the Dynamiters scored on the power play after just three minutes into the game, and doubled their lead less than a minute later.

Another Kimberley goal made the score3 – 0 early in the second, before Ryan St. Jean was able to give the Rockies their first goal shortly after.

Thanks to Damon Raven, Columbia Valley scored once in the third, but three Dynamiter goals tallied the outcome 6 – 2.

Rockies assists went to Harrison Davies, Dario Piva (2), and St. Jean.

Dynamiter Keenan Kaase scored three goals and an assist, including the game winner.

Goaltender Jason Sandhu played the first four minutes, and after making one save on three shots, goaltender Patrick Ostermann filled in, blocking an additional 32 shots.

Saturday’s game was dominated by the Thunder Cats, who scored fun unanswered goals in the first period – two on the power play.

After a scoreless second period, the Rockies saw a comeback in sight – Damon Raven and Malcolm Fenelon both scored – cutting the lead in half with ten minutes remaining. But Creston Valley scored seconds later, and the score stayed 5 – 2 until the final buzzer.

Rockies assists went to Ryan St. Jean, Harrison Davies (2), and Dario Piva – those three player all contributed to 75 per cent of Rockies goals scored over the weekend. Ostermann stopped 18 of 22 shots in the first period, and Sandhu played the remainder, blocking 17 of 18. Austin Steger of the Thunder Cats scored both of his teams’ power player goals, and earned an assist.

The Rockies had a chance for revenge last night against the Dynamiters, as the two fought it out at the Eddie Mountain Memorial Arena last night. Those results were not available by press deadline.

Columbia Valley’s next game is in Golden on Friday, January 30th, and they’ll be at the Eddie again on Saturday, January 31st for another tango with Kimberley. Both games start at 7:30 p.m.
