Kimoto wins tennis title

Ray Kimoto of Vernon won the men's 75+ singles at the 130th Island Grasscourt Tennis Championships

Ray Kimoto of Vernon won the men’s 75+ singles and placed second in doubles at the 130th Van. Island Grasscourt Tennis Championships last week in Cowichan.

More than 200 participants came from California, Oregon, Washington, Calgary and B.C. competed.

In singles, Kimoto defeated Gordon Verge of Nanaimo 6-3, 7-5 in the semis and then took the title by defeating Bud Travers of Berkeley, Calif. 7-5, 6-3.

In doubles, Kimoto and his partner, Gordon Verge, won 6-3, 6-2, over Ron Dalen and Gary Pronk, both of Cowichan, and then lost 6-3, 3-6, 9-11, to Peter Wilson and Al Robinson, both of Cowichan.

Kimoto’s next tournament will be the Canadian Senior Nationals Championships, Aug. 20-26, in Vancouver. Meryl Ogden of Vernon will also be playing in the Senior Nationals.
