It wasn’t an important game as the Kodiaks have sealed first place in the league and their spot in the playoffs.
Still, the Aldergrove Kodiaks were lacklustre in the first two periods against the Surrey Knights, Wednesday at Aldergrove Arena. The teams were tied at 1-1 at the start of the third period, with their only goal in the first period from Elijah Vilio, assisted by Sam Bodnaruk.
The Kodiaks finally took the lead in the third period, and an 8-3 win, to improve their standing to 68 points after 41 games (34 wins and seven losses). With three regular season games left, they have a chance to beat their previous record of 72 points in a season.
Scoring for the Kodiaks in the third were Kurt Klimek, Clayton Schroeder, Eric Callegari, Matt Oliver, Quinncy Leroux, Ty Pickering and Derian White. Assists came from Kyle Bosko, Oliver (2), Leroux (2), Callegari (2), Pickering, Bosko, Joshua Poitras, Schroeder, Klimek, Jacob De Waal, and Vilio.
Leroux and Callegari were named the first and second stars of the game, respectively.
The Kodiaks outshot the Knights every period for a game total of 45 to 18. Kodiaks keeper Caleb Ziemann stopped 15 of those 18 shots on his net. Neither team was able to score on power plays.
The Kodiaks play the Abbotsford Pilots Friday at MSA Arena and host the Richmond Sockeyes at Aldergrove Arena in their final regular season home game on Wednesday, Feb. 8, 7:15 p.m. The Kodiaks final game is away at Surrey Knights on Feb. 9.
