Anthony Crowther scored 16 points to lead a balance effort as the Kwalikum Secondary School senior boys basketball team coasted to an 80-31 win over visiting Cedar Community Secondary of Nanaimo Tuesday night in Qualicum Beach.
Keito Akiyama added 13 points and Arne Olefs had 12 as the AA Kondors wrapped up a home-and-home sweep of exhibition games against Cedar, a Class A school which re-opened this year after being closed by the Nanaimo Ladysmith School District the previous two years.
The Spartans carried just six players for Tuesday’s contest, including two Grade 10s and one Grade 9.
“They played hard, though,” said Dave Frampton, the Kwalikum coach whose team is unbeaten atop the North Island AA standings. “They never quit.”
It was the fourth game in five days for Kwalikum, which faced the opposite end of the competitive spectrum in last weekend’s Towhee Tournament at Vanier Secondary in Courtenay.
The Kondors opened that tourney with a lopsided, 79-48 win over Timberline of Campbell River, but were then dumped 83-58 by AAAA Parkland in the semifinals and 96-64 by New Westminster, another powerful AAAA program, in the third-fifth place game.
“We haven’t had any close games,” Frampton cracked. “We either win big or we lose big.”
