After wrapping up their division last week, the Kwalikum Kondors senior boys soccer team will play host to the North Island Championships (taking place yesterday and today) at Merle Logan Field in Nanaimo.
The Kondors had a strong regular season, winning some big games against rival Ballenas Whalers and another tough squad in the Dover Bay Dolphins.
The Kondors closed out with a big 6-1 win over the Barsby Bulldogs to wrap up their division title.
“We’re trending in the right direction,” coach Butch Gayton said. “We’ve made some adjustments late in our season to try and fit our team and the boys have taken to it pretty well. There’s still a few kinks but we’re definitely on the right path.”
Finish well enough and it’s off to the Islands where a berth in the provincials will be at stake, something that Gayton thinks isn’t out of reach for the young squad.
“We’ve got a lot of talented, athletic kids,” Gayton said. “We’re young but we’ve got the skill to make up for it. All we need to do is play our game and keep level heads out there and we should be alright.”
