The KPU (Kwantlen Polytechnic University) Eagles men’s soccer team will host three opponents, including a pair of CIS schools, at its inaugural Spring Soccer Tournament this weekend at Newtona Athletic Park.
The four-team event will also feature the Pacific Western Athletic Conference (PACWEST) champions, the Thompson Rivers University Wolfpack, and the University of British Columbia (UBC) Thunderbirds, the reigning CIS (Canadian Interuniversity Sports) champions. The University of the Fraser Valley Cascades, also a CIS school, are the fourth team.
Thompson Rivers will play UBC in one semifinal at 1 p.m. Saturday, with the KPU Eagles kicking off against the UFV in the other at 3 p.m. The losers will play Sunday at 1 p.m., the winners will take to the field at 3 p.m.
Admisson is free.
KPU is already looking ahead to the second annual Spring soccer Tournament, announcing it will also include four women’s teams in addition to four men’s squads.
Playoff loss ends hoops season
A quarterfinal loss to the Quest Kermodes brought the women’s basketball season to an end.
After a sixth-place finish in the regular season, the KPU Eagles dropped an 80-47 decision to the Kermodes last Thursday at the PACWEST playoff tournament in New Westminster. Shilpa Khanna of the Eagles was named Player of the Game.
Badminton bronze in Edmonton
The KPU Eagles mixed doubles duo of Chris Chung and Rosalynn Chong earned a bronze medal at the 2014 CCAA (Canadian Colleges Athletic Association) national championships in Edmonton with a 2-0 victory over the Mount Allison Mounties by scores of 21-17 and 21-11.
The team finished the round robin ranked third with a 3-1 (won-lost) record and were then defeated by PACWEST rival Langara College Falcons 2-0 in the semifinals by scores of 22-20 and 22-20.
Willine Kwee and Alisa Young of KPU fell in the women’s doubles bronze medal match 21-11, 21-16 while Brad Mear placed fifth in the men’s singles competition with a 14-21, 21-16, 21-12 victory.
In the team standings, KPU finished second overall.
