Aidan Goodfellow played the best golf of his young collegiate career, leading the Simon Fraser University men’s golf team to a tie for second at the recent Hanny Stanislaus Invitational in California.
The freshman from Qualicum Beach and a product of Kwalikum Secondary golf team, shot rounds of 73-69-69 at the Turlock Golf & Country Club in California for a 5-under-par total of 211.
That score was good enough to earn him a share of second place on the leaderboard. Over the 54 holes, Goodfellow recorded 10 birdies and two eagles and his placing was the highest among the Great Northwest Athletic Conference golfers in the field.
Josh McCollum of Chico State was crowned the individual champion with his 10-under-par 206 (67-67-72) and the Wildcats also took home the team title.
In addition to the stellar performance by Goodfellow, SFU also relied on its veterans to lift the team to a runner-up finish. Juniors Sy Lovan (75-73-69) and Scott Kerr (71-75-71) both fired a three-round total of 217, which put them in a tie for 10th overall alongside nine other golfers.
A pair of freshmen rounded out the Clan lineup. Isaac Lee carded rounds of 71-73-78 (222) to finish in a tie for 35th. Meanwhile, Jordan Bean placed T-72nd with scores of 82-78-75 (235).
Overall, Simon Fraser got three consistent rounds of golf from its players and the team shot a 284 in the final round, the second-lowest total of the day.
The Clan finished with an even-par 864 (290-290-284) to tie with the tournament hosts and two strokes ahead of GNAC foe Western Washington.
“Our results from this tournament gives us a lot of momentum heading into GNAC Championships,” said Matthew Steinbach, SFU golf head coach. “Aidan played with a lot of confidence and the rest of the lineup also contributed to this second-place finish. We came together as a team and ended the regular season on a high note. I’m excited to see what this group can achieve in Coeur d’Alene.”
SFU will begin preparations for the GNAC Championships on April 22-23 at the Coeur d’Alene Golf Resort. The team will look to defend its team title and battle for a berth to the NCAA championships.
