After making history with their first ever playoff win on Saturday afternoon, the Kelowna Owls face another challenge this weekend—the Mt. Douglas Rams.
KSS will travel to Victoria to take on No. 2-ranked Mt. Douglas Friday afternoon in the quarterfinal round of the B.C. high school football post-season.
The Rams are the three-time defending provincial champs.
“We’re looking forward to it,” said Owls’ defensive co-ordinator Alex Blanchard. “It’s a big challenge but I think our kids have grown up a lot this year and are capable of giving them a good game.”
Mt. Douglas went 7-0 in the Western Conference during the regular season, outscoring their opponents 243-51.
“They throw the ball well, they run the ball well, and they’re solid on defense,” Blanchard said of Mt. Douglas. “We still have a young team, so this is a big game for our program. It would be nice to win, but really the the kids are going to really benefit from this. We’ve got some game breakers, so you never know.”
The Owls secured a spot in the quarters with the school’s first ever playoff victory Saturday at CNC. KSS scored early and often en route to a convincing 46-12 drubbing of the Notre Dame Jugglers.
“It was a big step for our kids,” Blanchard said. “To go out there and not be intimidated by a team from Vancouver was great to see.”
Seth Campell scored three touchdowns and threw a TD pass, while Parker Simpson scored to majors and fired a pair of touchdowns passes—one each to Campbell and Adam DiBiase.
Manny Chamberlain led the defence with seven tackles, three sacks and a fumble recovery.
Kick off Friday in Victoria is 2:30 p.m.
New Westminster 40 Mt. Boucherie 7
The Mt. Boucherie Bears watched their AAA senior varsity season come to an end on Friday night in New Westminster in a 40-7 loss to the Hyacks.
The Bears, who went 3-4 during the regular season, knew they’d be in tough against the Hyacks running game.
“We just couldn’t stop their offense,” said Bears assistant coach Rick Nelson. “It was one of those in-between years for our program where we just didn’t have the horses. But the boys played hard.”
While the senior Bears are finished, the junior varsity squad has advanced to the quarterfinals.
Mt. Boucherie will be at New Westminster on Thursday for the second round of the playoffs. Last week, the JV Bears downed Centennial 48-7.
