The inaugural Soccer Solstice six-aside soccer tournament looks to have been a hit, and organizers are hoping to make it an annual event.
Pulled together by Kwalikum Secondary grad Madeleine Dwyer and played out at KSS last Saturday, the Soccer Solstice is one part fundraiser for garden projects in Qualicum Beach, and one part tuneup for the summer season.
“It went really well — I was very happy with how it went for the first time,” she said after, confirming “we’re hoping to turn it into an annual event,” then pointed out they had just under 40 people register with a number from out of town, and had four teams play three games each, “and a few people stayed on after that and kept playing …the great thing is we raised just over $200 for garden supplies, seeds and plants trees and shrubs.”
The Soccer Solstice also serves as kick-off of sorts to the summer soccer season, more specifically the RDN’s long-running 6-on-6 Summer Soccer co-ed league which starts up Thursday, July 4 and runs every Thursday for seven weeks up at KSS.
