The KSS senior boys basketball team defended their home court Tuesday night as they beat the Cedar Spartans by a score of 69–49.
Shane Gayton led the way for the Kondors, scoring 14 points on the night. Evan Stefanek and Dallas Uzelman each had 13 points. The Kondors controlled play from the opening tip and never looked back.
KSS took a 9–0 lead right out of the gate and kept finding a way to break the Spartans’ zone defense as they took a 32–23 lead into the half time break. Stefanek earned seven of his 13 points in the third quarter.
Things started to get a little chippy in the fourth quarter as Cedar started fouling hard but the Kondor boys had learned how to keep their heads level against some tough competition while they were down in San Diego over the holiday break.
“We played some solid teams down there over the break and they really play a different style of game,” said coach Barry Bevilacqua.
“It’s rougher inside and the referee’s really let them play. So we learned through the three games to just not get bothered by that stuff and play hard. That really helped us out as a team to get mentally and physically stronger and it showed tonight at certain points in the game.”
The Kondors are off to Salt Spring Island for the annual Nairn Howe Memorial Tournament. They will play the host Salt Spring Scorpions in front of what’s expected to be a packed gym tonight (Jan. 16).
