The Kondors went to work on their home turf Tuesday, topping a field of eight in BC High School team golf competition.

In action at QB Memorial Golf Course for an 18-hold shotgun start played out under ideal conditions, the kids from Kwalikum Secondary School carved out a four-player points total of 307 — seven strokes ahead of second place Shawnigan, and 14 better than Marc Isfeld from Courtenay. BSS finished well back.

All this missing their top two players — Santiago Bouyra and Cole Morrison.

“I carry a large team, so not everybody can can play every tournament,” KSS teacher/coach Butch Gayton said after.

“We played summer rules so the scores are a little higher than expected,” he surmised, explaining that in winter when the course is wet players are allowed to lift, clean and place their ball. In summer rules “it’s PGA rules — play it as it lies.

“The greens were the quickest we’ve seen this year,” he said, adding “overall I’m happy with our two through 11 — they played well, especially our younger players,” pointing to Gr. 9s Masato Wilson (78), Anthony Trozzo (79) and Blair Stewart (76).

Leading the charge on Tuesday was Gr. 12 captain Scott Austin with a three-over par 74.

KSS also had a #2 team in action that day made up of four players — Michelle Waters (the lone female competing that day), Joe Stevens, Moritz Moog, Nic Wassbauer — that finished fourth in the standings at 326.

An even par 70 turned in by a Ladysmith player was the lowest score on the day.

It was the Kondors third tournament win in four outings.
