Kwantlen shares first after shutout win

Women’s soccer team deadlocked for top spot with Langara Falcons

The Kwantlen Eagles got a huge win in Prince George on Saturday, then received a lot of help elsewhere in the province throughout the weekend, allowing the women’s soccer team to move into first place for the first time this season.

The defending two-time provincial champions blanked the university of Northern B.C. Timberwolves 4-0, improving their record to 6-0-4 (won-tied-lost) atop the PacWest league’s Pool A standings. The help came from the University of British Columbia – Okanagan Heat and the Thompson Rivers University Wolf Pack. The Heat held the Quest Kermodes to a 1-1 draw Saturday in Kelowna, then blanked the Langara Falcons 2-1 on Sunday. Thompson Rivers played the same two teams in Kamloops, doubling Langara 4-2 Saturday and edgiing Quest 1-0 Sunday.

The weekend results left Langara tied for first with Kwantlen, one point ahead of the Kermodes. The Eagles complete league play this weekend, visiting the Falcons Saturday in Burnaby before travelling to Squamish to face the Kermodes on Sunday.

Jenessa Moore opened the scoring for the Kwantlen women in Prince George, firing a shot off the post early in the second half. Yvamara Rodriguez added to the total, scoring three times to up her season’s total to seven.

The win clinched a berth in the provincial championship tournament Oct. 28-30 in Kelowna, where they will seek a third consecutive trip to the national championships.

Kwantlen’s men’s team was looking for its first win of the season in Prince George Saturday, and got the three points with a 3-0 victory.

Kevin Coles notched what would prove to be the winning goal after just seven minutes. Jethro Kambere of Surrey set up Delta’s Jacob Starheim for an insurance goal in the 54th minute, then Ricardo Alvarado completed the scoring in the 66th minute.

“This is something we’ve seen coming for a long time,” said Kwantlen head coach Ajit Braich. “But this was the day.”

The Eagles record improved to 1-3-6, a point behind fourth place Quest heading into their final weekend of the season when they visit Langara and Quest.
