The Lac la Hache Tomahawks are the new Senior AA hockey team in the Central Interior Hockey League that are playing out of their home Rolf Zeiss Memorial Arena.
Players from around the Cariboo came to the open tryouts, which began this Sept. 17-18 with 17 young men trying out each day.
There is another tryout slated for Sept. 24 from 2 to 3:30 p.m., and on Sept. 25, it will culminate with the unveiling of the team’s new Jerseys and an inter-squad game between the new 25-man roster with the games starting at 1 p.m.
Regular practices will be held every Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.
The Tomahawks first official game will be against the Williams Lake Stampeders on Oct. 1 in Williams Lake at 7:30 p.m., and their first home game will be on Oct. 15 against the Quesnel Kangaroos.
There will be games every weekend.
Assistant coach Wally Arcand says the coaching staff is very pleased with the turnout and skill levels they see. “[They are doing well to] shake off the rust from the summer.”
Arcand adds it will be a very competitive and fast-paced hockey and there will be growing pains, but they will overcome their adversities of being a new team in the Central Interior Sr. AA Hockey League.
Team secretary Eva Navrot adds she is really positive and excited about the team coming together. In the first year of a new team, she notes there is a lot of work to organize. Navrot says she is also excited about the team playing in the old Williams Lake Arena, which has brought back memories for her.
Their board of directors includes coach Al Navrot, Arcand, Eva Navrot, Henry Johnson, Edna Johnson, Willy Sellers, Rhonda Johnson, Ken Johnson, Sheila Kalast, Larry McCrea and Rudy Gunther.
Folks can come out and cheer on the Tomahawks at their inter-squad game on Sept. 25 from 1 to 3 p.m. at their home arena in Lac la Hache.
Folks can support the team by purchasing T-shirts for $20, and seasons passes for nine home games are $80 and single game tickets for $10.
Eva Navrot adds the club would welcome any sponsorship and any volunteer help. For more information, call Navrot at 250-392-2498.
