Lacarya Ladies Day Golf report

17 ladies added to the usual buzz of activity at Blackpool's Lacarya Golf Course

By Kay Knox

On the warm but somewhat cloudy afternoon of August 21, 17 ladies added to the usual buzz of activity at Blackpool’s Lacarya Golf Course on Highway 5.

The latest golf rules allow for the grass beside fairways to be longer than previously, and this adds its own challenges. With the theme for this particular Ladies Day being Fairways and Greens, it was even more significant.

Separate from stroke by stroke counting, landing a drive on the fairway gave us five points each time. So far so good, but then subtract all putts. Oh so cleverly, Jane Olsen’s first hit on every one of those nine holes put her ball on the fairway, giving her the winning score. Following her in turn came Madeline Klassen, Carol Hindle, Bergie Mitchell, and Marg Anderson with their efforts.

All these ladies say: “Thank you, Home Hardware, for the gift certificates we received from you.”

As usual, markers on specific holes test the skill of all players, with winners receiving cash that comes from the entry fees we pay each week. On Hole 1, results, after the second drive came to a rest on the fairway, were recorded.

For Flight 1, Sheila Colter’s was a good one; remarkably, Hazel Wadlegger and Joan Streadwick tied for Flight 2, and Abbey Bates won her money back for Flight 3.

Often no one wins KP – the first drive must land on the green, and stay there – but not this time. Closest to the pin prizes on Hole 5 went to Larissa Hadley, Jan Johnson, and Carol McNeil for their respective flights, while Carol H collected for “Open to All Players” on Hole 7.

In the putting skill games, Long Putt winners on Hole 6 were Deanna Pendergast, Joan Str (almost 20 feet!) and Jean Nelson for their various flights, while Jane putted her way to the flag to win “Open to All” on Hole 4. Madeline was in top form to win “Least Putts”, with Sheila just one putt behind her.

The pretty pond with its spraying fountain on Hole 4 was somewhat greedier than usual, swallowing balls from no less than six players! Isabell Hadford, Carol H, Larissa, Abbey, Deanna, and Joan Slingsby all grinned sheepishly upon receiving shiny, dry replacements.

Much happier were Madeline and Sheila as they collected cash for their Chip In shots on Holes 7 and 8. The Birdie Pot, however, continues to grow for the second week in a row. (I couldn’t resist the rhyme!)

Door prizes are all donated and, thanks to the large number of businesses supporting Ladies Golf Day, at least three names are pulled each week. Four lucky ladies collected this time: Hazel’s Gift Certificate came from Old Caboose Cafe; Isabell’s from Strawberry Moose originated with Fleetwest; Larissa will be spending hers at Mystic Dreams, and Jan has a Lacarya card courtesy of Isabell.

Last draw of the night always has us holding our breath as one ticket is drawn for 50/50. This time, exhaling breath turned into a cheer as Deanna’s name was read out.

This was Week 18 of 20 for the season. Where has the time gone? In between the last two weeks, we will enjoy an 18-Hole Wind-up Tournament, shared with the Men’s Group, on Saturday, Sept. 7. Anyone who has participated in five or more Ladies Golf Days is welcome to compete. Dinner and lunch are $25 per person. Others must pay the usual golf course charges as well. Signing up beforehand is essential.
