Lacrosse Association looking for tykes

The Wild is offering a reduced registration fee for mini-tykes, tykes

The Comox Valley Lacrosse Association is preparing to hit the floor for the 2018 minor lacrosse season after spring break.

Heading into its 15th season, the Wild has teams in place for boys and girls from four to 17 years.

This year, in an effort to grow the sport locally, the association is offering a reduced registration fee of $50 for mini-tyke (2012-13 birth years) and tyke (2010-11). The goal is to provide young players an opportunity to try Canada’s national summer sport, and to experience the fun, fitness and excitement of lacrosse.

Since the CVLA was founded, the focus has been player skill development and fun, says association vice-president Gary Spaven.

“We are really looking forward to this upcoming season, and are hoping that we can attract a large group of young players with this reduced registration fee to carry us on into the future and continue to build on the sport in the community,” Spaven said.

Once kids try the sport, it’s easy to become hooked, says CVLA president Geoff Garbutt.

“It’s such a fun game,” Garbutt said. “And it’s a good crossover sport for hockey and basketball.”

If players are interested, the CVLA is still looking for kids in the mini-tyke and tyke levels. Practices will begin April 9. League plays starts at the end of April.

The association hosts a fun day April 21 at the Comox Valley Sports Centre.
