The L.V. Rogers ladies team have returned home with a consolation title from the AA Provincial Field Hockey Championships.
Hanna Quinn and Noa Butterfield each scored as the Bombers downed Chilliwack’s G.W. Graham 2-0 in their final game Nov. 4 in Surrey.
The Bombers had to overcome a difficult start to the tournament last Wednesday. They were down 4-0 at halftime against SMUS, which featured two players from the under-18 national team, in their first game and ended up losing 5-0 on a rain-soaked turf field.
LVR didn’t fare well in its next game either. The Bombers lost defender Julia Burkart to an early injury before falling 3-0 to Seycove, despite a spirited second-half press.
The team’s offence failed them again in the final round-robin game Thursday with a 3-0 loss to Southridge that removed LVR from contention. A 1-0 loss to Okanagan Mission concluded another hard day for the team.
The goals finally came for LVR on Friday. Quinn scored twice, including once off a deflected shot by Shianne Michalchuk, to defeat Enver Creek 2-1.
Then in the finale, Quinn struck again just three minutes into play against G.W. Graham after collecting her own rebound. LVR put the game away on a rocket of a shot by Butterfield after a passing play by Michalchuk, Aimme Montpellier, Burkart, and Quinn.
Coaches Bruce, Karen and Laren Walgren and Rachel Lacroix wish all the best in the future for Grade 12 students Butterfield and Montpellier.
